The snakelike things are called Mana wurms.

WoW blood elves are addicted to arcane magic (to an extend where in the pen and paper game, if they don't use arcane magic or are the target of it within a certain period, they suffer some ill effects (that i do not recall))

Mana wurms are pretty mcuh amde from magical energy, in the intro movie to the expansion where blood elves were added, yous ee a blood elf female caressing one, before draining it's arcane energies from it (and thus killing it)
